Shooting for the All Stars
I started Boxcar to help make life better for New Jersey commuters. Over the past 3 years, I’ve met countless people working with other organizations that are also making a difference in our area, in so many ways. One of my favorites is the All Stars Project of New Jersey. This group, working in Newark since 1999, is dedicated to improving the lives of area kids who are often overlooked. Through resume workshops, interview coaching, and an amazing summer internship program, these students get a chance to see what opportunities are out there, and how to reach them. I am proud to be a supporter and trustee of the organization.
The All Stars have placed over 2,000 New Jersey high school students in paid summer internships at companies including PSEG, Investors Bank, and the Port Authority. At Boxcar, we’ve been lucky enough to host two of these great interns. They were both hard working, driven, bright kids, who just needed a chance. While I hope they learned from us over their weeks at Boxcar, I know we all learned from them. They brought a fresh perspective and excitement to the office, and worked hard at each project given to them. One is in college now, and the other is in his senior year of high school. I know they both have bright futures ahead of them, thanks in part to the All Stars Project.
To continue offering these great opportunities, the All Stars need some help. This year, the organization has an ambitious fundraising goal of $600,000 to help support their programs for inner-city youth. If you’d rather be more hands-on, the All Stars are always looking for professionals to donate a few hours to help students create resumes or practice interview skills. Just an hour here or there can make a huge difference in the lives of these kids. If you know of a company looking for a summer intern, I can’t recommend that program highly enough.
